Subject Demographics - What is this?
Age
Reporting the age of any and all organisms and human subjects.
For human subjects please see Implementation of the NIH Inclusion Across the Lifespan Policy; for animal subjects please see Training video module for the Vertebrate Animals
If we find an age statement, then SciScore expects to find the following items (sex, randomization, blinding, power);
Example: Their age varied from 19 to 47 years (mean 26.3 , ssd 6.4) and length of relationship from 4 months to 23 years (mean 3.7, ssd 4.4).
Example: Male C57BL/6J mice (7–10-weeks old) were purchased from Orient-Bio.
Example: In study 1, young (3– 4 months old) male KO and WT littermates (n 18 –20/genotype) were fed custom-formulated diets (Harlan-Teklad, Madison, WI) for 3– 4 weeks.
Weight
Reporting the weight of any and all organisms and human subjects.
If we find a weight statement, then SciScore expects to find the following items (sex, randomization, blinding, power);
Example: Six healthy adult rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) of Chinese origin (4–8 kg, three males and three females, 4–8 years old) were inoculated intramuscularly (i.m.) with 1,000 pfu of EBOV Makona strain.
Example: Wistar rats (180–200 g) were provided by the central animal house of the Federal University of Ceara´, Fortaleza— CE, Brazil.
Example: One-day-old healthy Arbor Acres (AA) broiler chickens (n = 180) with body weights of 45 ± 5 g were obtained from a commercial hatchery (Wuhan, China) and reared under favorable temperature and standard hygienic conditions.
Example: A total of 36 (67 ± 1 day old) healthy crossbred pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) with an average initial BW of 24.67 ± 3.49 kg were randomly divided into two groups with six replicate pens (three barrows replicates and three gilts replicates) per group and three pigs per replicate.
Example: Zealand rabbits, of a body weight between 2.5 and 3 kg, were used.
Example: Rainbow trout (93 ± 7 g body weight) were obtained from a hatchery (A Estrada, Spain) and transferred to our facilities.
Troubleshooting: Are you using d for days, mo for months, wk for weeks? SciScore will not usually understand those as ages. Please use the full name of your time (weeks / months / days) and the word “old”, i.e., flies were 2-3 days old, if you are having trouble. The word “aged” frequently means group, e.g., aged mice, so this is not a good word for animal age. The instar stage should be recognized as an age, but we have had troubles getting SciScore to recognize insect ages this way.
